Information about ANCONA Ancona is located in central Italy, on the Adriatic coast. The town is situated in region of Le Marche, much-touted as the 'new Tuscany'. Inland from the beach resorts and busy ports of the Adriatic coastline. Ancona is mostly known as a modern port, not a tourist town, but it also has an appealing historic town on a hill. From the 11th-century duomo you can enjoy a wonderful sea view. Ancona is also the home of the region's archeological museum, the Museo Archeologico Nazionale delle Marche, with exhibits including impressive Roman bronze statues. The ancient town was founded by refugees from Syracuse about 390 BC, who gave it its name: Ancona is a very slightly modified transliteration of the Greek, meaning "elbow"; the harbor to the east of the town was originally protected only by the promontory on the north, shaped like an elbow. Severely damaged by war and earthquakes, workaday Ancona has a few historical monuments embedded in a tangle of commercial buildings. The modern centre is a grid of broad avenues and palm-shaded piazzas. The coast is characterized by sandy beaches on the North (Senigallia and Falconara), enchanting rocky beaches (Portonovo) as well as shingly beaches (Numana, Marcelli) on the South. Besides the flourishing touristic vocation, in the towns along the coast the activity of fishing is particularly important while short rivers and channels flow in the valleys inland, where orchards, vineyards, olive-groves and vegetables are grown and livestock is reared. When it became a Roman colony is doubtful. It was occupied as a naval station in the Illyrian war of 178 B.C. (Liv. xli. i). Julius Caesar took possession of it immediately after crossing the Rubicon. Its harbour was of considerable importance in imperial times, as the nearest to Dalmatia, and was enlarged by Trajan
